Happy Hour Bordeaux Wine Tasting Wednesday, April 1st 6PM and all the Bordeaux in the store on SALE!!

If God forbade drinking, would He have made wine so good?
Cardinal Richeleu
Bordeaux is one of our favorite wines and although the first growths and other top wines of Pomerol and Saint Emilion carry a hefty price tag you can still find a few great values even among some of the classified growths in St. Estephe, Margaux, St Julien, Pauillac and the Haut Medoc.
As we start winding up the season we will be adding more “Happy Hour” tastings to the calendar of events and this tasting is a belly up to the bar, hang out with your friends. The food is casual, not a sit-down dinner- a true “Happy Hour” style event mix and immingle with our “Wine Drinking People” but with GREAT wines. Tonight, we have a great selection of Bordeaux wines from the dry whites to cellar worthy reds and of course no Bordeaux tasting is complete without the great sweet wines like Sauternes or Barsac.
I have also included all the wines from Bordeaux that we have in the store on SALE on this offering just in case you wanted to host your own Bordeaux wine tasting events. We have an incredible collection of older vintage Bordeaux in the store right now going back to the 1960’s.
This tasting starts at 6pm and chef Toni will be making some appetizers to accompany the tasting wines. The fee for this tasting is $95 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

Happy Hour Bordeaux Wine Tasting
Wednesday, April 1st
6pm
NV Empreinte Blanc de Noirs Cremant de Bordeaux
Price: $52.50 Your Price: $46.20
A unique Sparkling wine from Bordeaux, we love bubbles at Wine Watch!
2023 Saam Long (white wine of Margaux)
Price: $34.50 Your Price: $30.36
In the mid-2010s, the DOMAINES P team was inspired to produce an unusual white wine. Starting from a blank page, the quest for the ideal blend was guided by Nathalie Perrodo’s whimsy and Marjolaine de Coninck’s vision. Beyond the joy of this project, it was the occasion for numerous tastings and wonderful discoveries !
The Chardonnays were planted in 2017, slowly followed by Albarino and Petit Manseng. The plots are located in the commune of Margaux, at the foot of the Labégorce plateau. Their terroir reveals a subtle mosaic of limestone resurgences and ancient alluvial soils, poor in organic matter but of great quality
Reflecting the spirit that drives the life of DOMAINES P, Saam Long is a luminous white wine, beautifully balanced, with subtly spicy aromas of peaches, white flowers, citrus fruit and almonds.
It’s a wine that speaks to the heart, evoking the sweetness of a summer evening, a sky filled with stars, memories of happiness and freedom.
Saam Long means three dragons, symbolizing the three children Perrodo family, the three châteaux of DOMAINES P, and the three atypical varieties of this fruity and intense white wine.
2024 Château Suduiraut Lions de Suduiraut Bordeaux Blanc
Price: $31.50 Your Price: $25.20
With a pale yellow color, Lions de Suduiraut Blanc Sec 2024 reveals an open and very fresh nose. It offers discreet floral notes, as well as citrus fruits such as grapefruit and lemon, followed by a touch of minerality. After a round and fresh attack, the palate develops a fleshy, crisp character with aromas of pear, granny smith and a lemony mineral note. The finish is taut and mineral, with citrus zest.
Blend: 56% Sémillon, 29% Sauvignon Blanc, 15% Sauvignon Gris
2021 Chateau Carbonnieux Blanc Pessac Leognan
Price: $50.00 Your Price: $44.00
(92-94 Points) The 2021 Carbonnieux Blanc has a relatively spicy bouquet, very slight touches of muscat filtering through the citric fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a spicy entry and good weight. Persistent in the mouth, leaving behind a long, saline aftertaste. This is another excellent dry white Bordeaux. - By Neal Martin on April 2022
2018 Chateau de Panigon Medoc, France
Price: $18.75 Your Price: $16.50
(91 points) Reflecting the rich, dense 2018 vintage, this wine has a concentration that shows richness and juicy black fruits. It is taking its time to mature, still with a core of dryness. Drink the wine from 2025. — (July 2022) - Roger Voss Wine Enthusiast
Estate: Chateau de Panigon benefits from one side of the Atlantic Ocean influences, the other of the presence of the Gironde estuary, providing favorable weather conditions for the development of grape varieties and a maturity of grapes. The vineyard grows on gravel mounds worthy of the best soils of the Medoc. Composed of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, the vineyard flourish hillocks on some of the best terroirs in the Medoc. Today the Chateau estate is composed of 90 hectares in the AOC Medoc region grouped around and about the domain, of which 53 hectares are planted with vines producing wine at the moment. Their estate vineyards are an average of 28 years old and are grown on an ideal blend of gravel and clay-limestone soils. Harvest is carried out parcel by parcel with manual and mechanical methods. The final wines are aged 100% in French oak (33% new barrels), for 12-18 months.
2016 Chateau Simard Saint-Emilion Grand Cru
Price: $42.00 Your Price: $36.96
"This juicy, soft wine with lots of acidity and bright black-currant flavors is made for early drinking. Soft tannins are cushioned by fruitiness. " Wine Enthusiast
2022 Chateau Belgrave Haut Medoc
Price: $45.00 Your Price: $39.60
(95 Points) Juicy, forward, bright and vibrant this has a great energy straight away, crisp and tannic, but well integrated so you get almost a bouncy palate with flint edges giving minerality and acidity providing the lift. Feels detailed and precise, lovely definition to the overall frame and this carries to a long finish. Impressive, I like the strength and the focus and it doesn't feel overripe or too extracted. So much to like about this wine with subtle liquorice, mint and crushed stone aspects. This will be excellent. Decanter
2022 Chateau Lafitte Cotes de Bordeaux
Price: $33.00 Your Price: $29.04
Sixteen months of aging in barrels for this red marked by Merlot (80%). Adorned with a deep color, it reveals a charming, ripe, skillfully woody nose, with frank notes of slightly candied black fruits. A full attack opens onto a mouth Gironde, sunny, supported by ripe and liquorice tannins. All carried by a freshness not always present in 2022. Complete, harmonious, with good keeping potential, it is an indisputable success.
2019 Chateau Lafitte Heritage Cotes de Bordeaux
Price: $73.50 Your Price: $64.68
Heritage is a limited-edition wine created to celebrate the estate’s rich history and honor its owners since 1763. It is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot, sourced from carefully selected vineyard parcels and aged for 16 months in oak barrels.
Tasting Note: On the first nose, the wine is discreet, but it then opens up to aromas of black cherries, accompanied by notes of oriental spices and tobacco. This vintage is marked by a beautiful structure. It is both fleshy, charming, and has great length. A wine for aging, in the pure style of great Bordeaux wines.
2021 Chateau Fombrauge St Emilion
Price: $45.00 Your Price: $39.60
(92 Points) Ripe, chewy and mouthfilling, this is on the plusher side in terms of fruit flavour but with a core of velvet-like, quite grippy tannins that take hold and support the fruit. Lashings of dark chocolate, liquorice, vanilla and a cinnamon edge giving a lovely nuance of spice while the juicy fruit flavours linger on top. A dark, savoury style with plenty going on but delivered with refinement and clarity. Certainly one of the bolder styles. Decanter
2022 Baron de Brane Cantenac Margaux
Price: $48.00 Your Price: $42.24
The name has a long history which goes back to the 18th century, a man who was crazy about wine used to own Baron Mouton also known as the Napoleon of the vineyards because of his acquisitions. Thus the current name- Brane (family name) and Cantenac (village Name). A blend of 50/50 Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, a classic Medoc blend, the 2015 vintage was a great year. The property consists of 75 hectares, they have four different vineyards. The 30 hectares in front of the Chateau is the best Cabernet Sauvignon and is what goes into the gold label. They have deep gravel mixed with clay providing excellent drainage. Then there is a more early maturing terroir on a hill and this is in a horse shoe shape they own 3/4 of this special hill, Palmer and Rauzan Seglau own the other parts. This vintage of Baron de Brane yielded 120,000 bottles, the wine stayed in barrel for 12 months. On the tongue this wine smooth and polished on the tongue with silky tannins a nice amount of currant and plum fruit with hints of dried herbs and tobacco spice through the finish along with light coco notes. Finish 35+ Excellent
2022 Chateau d'Arsac Le Kid d'Arsac, Margaux
Price: $35.00 Your Price: $30.80
From a Château and winery that lay in ruins 35 years ago, winemaker Philippe Raoux has overseen a dramatic makeover. He acquired many more vines, and managed to have the majority promoted to Margaux AOC. This blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grown on gravel brown soil is vinified in stainless steel. Aging takes place half in new French oak barrels, and half in stainless vats for one year. This full-bodied, structured, fruit-forward dry red has toasted notes of spice. Pair with roasted wild boar.
2022 Pastourelle De Clerc Milon Pauillac
Price: $55.00 Your Price: $47.52
(93 Points) Violets, cassis, ripe black cherries, and graphite all emerge from the 2022 Pastourelle De Clerc Milon, a ripe, medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and lively second wine that has tons to love. As with the Grand Vin, it's undeniably one of the best examples of this cuvée to date. It will keep for two decades if well stored. Jeb Dunnuck, Review Date: 02/2025
2022 Chateau Haut-Batailley Verso, Pauillac
Price: $52.50 Your Price: $46.20
(93 Points) Very floral, the 2022 Château Haut-Batailley Verso has beautiful black raspberry and cassis-like notes as well as hints of spicy wood and violet, medium to full body, a rounded, layered mouthfeel, and a great finish. Jeb Dunnuck, Review Date: 02/2025
2017 Chateau Les Ormes de Pez St Estephe
Price: $60.00 Your Price: $52.80
(92 Points) Ormes has managed another good vintage after a run of them. This is a lovely wine and a buy for me. Succulent, bristling and charming, it has juicy brambled fruit extraction and tension. It doesn't take itself too seriously, just asking to be loved. The fruit spectrum is rich with blueberries and damsons, with integrity and a swirl of vanilla bean oak. Includes 6% Cabernet Franc in the blend. No need to wait too long for this. 45% new oak. Decanter
2009 Pagodes de Cos d'Estournel St. Estephe
Price: $135.00 Your Price: $118.80
(94 Points) The brilliant 2009 Les Pagodes de Cos actually has more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend than the grand vin (69% versus 65%) in addition to mostly Merlot and a small quantity of Petit Verdot. As powerful as the Cos in terms of alcoholic clout (14.5%), the full-bodied, round, generous Les Pagodes de Cos exhibits lots of creme de cassis and floral notes intermixed with hints of wood/barrique and spice. Juicy, succulent and remarkably fresh and well-delineated, it merits considerable attention from consumers. It should drink well for 15-20 years. Oddly enough, the second wine is superior to many vintages of Cos in the 1960s 1970s and 1980s! Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
2020 Chateau La Croix De Beaucaillou St. Julien
Price: $81.00 Your Price: $71.28
(95 Points) So much purity and definition, this is a beautiful wine with clarity of flavour. Touches of grilled almond and rosemary, mocha, smoke and coffee bean, there is so much freshness, with juice rushing in between the muscles and a mint leaf finish. 3.78pH, 60% new oak. Yields were 25-30hl/ha. In a year where second wines in the Médoc have sometimes suffered from over-concentration, La Croix de Beaucaillou is a standout success. (for Decanter) Jane Anson, Review Date: 04/2021
2021 Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou Le Petit Ducru St. Julien
Price: $54.00 Your Price: $47.52
(92 Points) Floral and aromatic, expressive and perfumed with sweet blackcurrant touches. Cool blue fruits; blueberries, plums and damsons, this is slightly sombre, dark and heady with a fresh minty-liquorice and crushed stone texture giving an appealing salinity. Satsifying weight in the mouth, but delicately presented with spiced nuances. Quite strict on the mid-palate, some tension coming through with energy and polish. Decanter
2020 Carmes De Rieussec Sauternes 375ml
Price: $28.50 Your Price: $25.08
The second wine of this vaunted Sauternes property, similarly high standards are applied to the production of this oak-aged dessert wine. Full-bodied and packed with flavors of lemon curd, honeysuckle, apricot, peach, white flowers and vanilla custard, finishes sweet yet clean. The palate is light and yet voluptuous. The attack is fresh, with the same flavors as the bouquet. The smooth finish is characterized by a buttery notes and hint of muscat. Blend: 90% Semillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc, 3% Muscadelle

Pessac Leognan
Pessac-Léognan is a wine growing area and Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée, in the northern part of the Graves region of Bordeaux. Unlike most Bordeaux appellations, Pessac-Léognan is equally famous for both red and (dry) white wines, although red wine is still predominant. It includes the only red-wine producer outside the Haut-Médoc classified in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, the premier cru Château Haut-Brion, and also includes all of the châteaux listed in the 1953/59 classification of Graves. These classed growths account for a third of the wine produced in Pessac-Léognan.
Pessac-Léognan lies on the left bank of the Garonne. It is immediately south of the city of Bordeaux (with a small portion to the west): indeed some of the northern vineyards of Pessac-Léognan are completely surrounded by the housing estates of Bordeaux, as a result of the city's southward expansion. It consists of 8 communes: (from north to south) Mérignac, Talence, Pessac, Gradignan, Villenave-d'Ornon, Cadaujac, Léognan and Martillac. A significant part of the area is forested. It includes 1580 hectares of vines. The soil is very gravelly with the Médoc to the north, Cabernet Sauvignon is the predominant grape, but a somewhat greater proportion of Merlot is typically used in the blend. Cabernet Franc is also used, with small amounts of Petit Verdot and Malbec. Styles vary more widely than in most Bordeaux AOCs, but typical flavors are blackcurrant and cedar, and the wines are often described as 'earthy'.
White wine
Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon are the grapes used, usually blended. The wine is typically fermented in barrels at a low temperature. Nectarine is a typical flavor when the wines are young, maturing (over 7–15 years) into flavors of nuts, honey and custard. They are said to be among France's greatest whites.

Margaux
Margaux is a wine growing commune and Appellation d'origine contrôlée within Haut-Médoc in Bordeaux, centered around the village of Margaux. Its leading (premier cru) château is also called Margaux. It contains 21 cru classé châteaux, more than any other commune in Bordeaux.
As well as Margaux itself, the appellation includes the villages of Cantenac, Arsac, Soussans and Labarde. It is on the left bank of the Gironde. It is the southernmost appellation in the Médoc (the haut in Haut-Médoc refers to the fact that it lies upstream), not far north of Bordeaux itself. To the east is the Landes forest. The soil is the thinnest in the Médoc, with the highest proportion of gravel. (The generally received opinion being that poor soil makes good wine.) The gravel provides good drainage. The forest to the west shelters the vines from Atlantic breezes. Margaux contains 1413 hectares of vineyards, making it the second largest appellation in the Haut-Médoc (after Saint-Estèphe). The châteaux are concentrated in the village, and the vineyards are more intermingled than elsewhere. The vines ripen 7–10 days before the rest of the Médoc.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the predominant grape, but it is invariably blended with other grapes. As with all red Bordeaux, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec may also be included in the blend (although wines will not necessarily include all five grapes). The wine is known for its perfumed fragrance. The dominant fruit flavour is blackcurrant. The wine from the southern part of the appellation (i.e. Cantenac, Arsac and Labarde) tends to be more powerful but less fragrant, and leans more towards plum.
Wine from Margaux may be labelled as Haut-Médoc (usually wine which the château considers inferior to its main offering and wishes to market under a different label). It would also be possible (though unusual) for the wine to be labelled using the Médoc AOC or one of the Regional Bordeaux AOCs.

Saint Julien
Just a little bit less powerful than Pauillac and rustic than Saint-Estèphe, Saint-Julien wines are very aromatized. They are harmonious and well balanced red wines. Saint-Julien is the right balance between Pauillac and Margaux.
Saint-Julien has 11 Grands Crus Classés (great growths). The quality is so good in Saint-Julien, that second wines from those châteaux are very attractive.

Pauillac
Pauillac is on the left bank of the Gironde. St-Julien is to the south. A stream called Ruisseau de Juillac marks part of the boundary between the two communes; other parts are marked by a stone wall and a country lane. To the north, across the Jalle du Breuil, lies St-Estèphe. Pauillac is bounded on the west by the parish of St Sauveur and the Landes forest. All three communes lie within the Haut-Médoc. The town of Pauillac is the largest in the Médoc, with a population of over 5000. Pauillac is somewhat more elevated than the surrounding area, rising to a peak of nearly 30 metres above sea-level in the region of Château Pontet-Canet. The soil is gravelly, as with most of the Haut-Médoc. The forest to the west shelters the vines from the Atlantic winds. Pauillac contains around 1200 hectares of vineyards.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the predominant grape, but it is invariably blended with other grapes. As with all red Bordeaux, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec may also be included in the blend (although wines will not necessarily include all five grapes). Prior to the 19th century, Malbec was predominant.
The style has been described as 'stark'. The predominant fruit flavor is usually blackcurrant, sometimes veering into plum. Pencil-shavings and cigar-box are also characteristic notes.
Wine from Pauillac may be labelled as Haut-Médoc (usually wine which the château considers inferior to its main offering and wishes to market under a different label). Similarly, second (or third) wines from the grandes châteaux may be labelled simply as Pauillac.

St Estephe
Saint-Estèphe is a true "terroir" wine. The influence of the soil, gravels as usual and more clays than in Médoc, can be experienced when tasting a Saint-Estèphe wine. Although Pauillac is just close-by, Saint-Estèphe wines are different.
Saint-Estèphe wines are very colored, earthy, firm, robust and tannic. They reach their maturity slower than other Médoc wines.
Saint-Estèphe hosts 5 Grands Crus Classés (great growths) such as Château Montrose and Château Cos d'Estournel

Pomerol
The Bordeaux region is one of the most important wine-producing regions in the world, it produces a third of the good quality wine French production. Bordeaux is 57 appellations, more than 9,000 wine-producing châteaux, and 13,000 wine growers. Bordeaux is near the Atlantic coast, in the south west of France. Wine has been grown in Bordeaux for two thousand years. Most probably vines grew there before the arrival of the Roman in 56 before J.C. The poet Ausonius wrote about it, a château still bare his name, the "Château Ausone".
At the beginning of the second millennium the region was under English domination. Hundred of boats loaded with barrels of "Claret" left for England. The "Claret" was a light red wine Englishmen loved, the word is still used to refer to Red Bordeaux. The large diversity of Bordeaux suggests an equal diversity of soil. The climate is generally temperate with a short winter and a high degree of humidity generated by the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean.
The celebrated regions of the right bank, Pomerol and St Emilion, have very little to do with the rest of Bordeaux. They lie well to the east of Bordeaux itself. Where the Médoc and Graves are characterized by gravelly soils, on the right bank the soil has more clay and limestone. Cabernet Sauvignon does not usually perform well here, and Merlot and Cabernet Franc are much more widely planted. A warmer drier climate than the maritime Médoc also benefits the region.
The right bank was mostly excluded from the 1855 classification (the exceptions being the St Emilion first growths of Cheval Blanc and Ausone) and as a whole was not taken that seriously until the early 20th century. Today, due to the garagist movement- the recent development on the Right Bank has been the production of wines from newly created but tiny estates. A policy of very low yields, ageing in new oak barrels, and the rarity value of the wines, has created a somewhat absurd demand for such exceedingly expensive wines as Le Pin (Pomerol) and Valandraud (St Emilion). Their quality is excellent, but they offer poor value, except for wine drinkers who must have 'cult' wines in their cellars at all costs. This is a reflection of the quality of the best wines and of the sensuous properties of the Merlot grape, which gives rounder, more opulent wines than the austere Cabernet Sauvignon. The St Emilion wines have been classified, but Pomerol still has no classification, although the best wines are internationally recognized.
Because the wine business has been so entrenched in their history and the entire economy of this region of France is based on what the English have coined the term “Claret”, they have a system of doing business like other wine producing region on the face of the earth. The best of the Bordeaulaise get paid for their product up to two years before it gets to the market. The top wines are sought out by collectors the world over years before they will come to rest in their cellars; and in some cases many years before they will actually be consumed. It is like the stock market, for wine junkies. Bordeaux Futures are a bet that the wine will be more valuable when it arrives than it was when it was actually purchased.
Pomerol
The Pomerol vineyards are located on a plateau that rises and falls slightly as it slopes gently down through a series of terraces toward the valley of the Isle River, which flows into the Dordogne River. The appellation is bordered on the north by the Barbanne, a tributary of the Isle, on the east by Saint Emilion (the Cheval Blanc and Figeac wine estates), and on the south and west by the city of Libourne. Pomerol is an area only two and a half miles long and two miles wide with exceptionally favorable geology and unique wine-producing potential. It is one of the smallest of the Bordeaux wine areas and produces a yearly average of about 350,000 cases of wine. Most of the region's properties, with a few exceptions, are small; the 185 wine estates in Pomerol have an average of eight acres of grapes each. The area is mainly characterized by a unique set of geological conditions. The surface soil is gravel, more or less compact or sandy; and its subsoil contains ferrous oxide, locally known as "crasse de fer", which, together with its specific microclimate, gives Pomerol wines their distinctive personality.
It is speculated that wine grapes have been grown there ever since the Romans inhabited Gaul. The development of the vineyards began in the 12th Century and continued throughout the Middle Ages. Pomerol was an important stopping place along the road of the pilgrims journeying from all over Europe to the Spanish pilgrimage of Saint Jacques de Compostelle. The Knights of Malta built a manor and a Roman church - since destroyed - as well as a hospital. The ancient hospital is the present Château Gazin building; it may be one of the last vestiges of the middle ages in Pomerol. Unfortunately, the troubles of the Hundred Years' War led to the abandonment of most of the vineyards. Subsequently restored, they again suffered greatly during the Religious Wars. Minutes in the archives of Libourne date the beginning of Pomerol's evolution toward its modern form to the middle of the 18th Century. It began in 1753 when Louis Leonard Fontemoing, a grape-grower in a locality called "Trop Chaud" ("Too Hot"), transformed his vineyard by taking out the white grapes and putting in red grapes. Besides the Pressac red, bouchet (or cabernet franc) and merlot made their first historically recorded appearance. They are the dominant varieties in Pomerol today.
Some historians claim that the real ascendancy of Pomerol began in the second half of the 19th Century. However, modern tasters have reported on many great Pomerol vintages (dating back to the 1920's) from the region's pre-eminent estate, Château Pétrus. Nevertheless, pre-war vintages of Pomerol were not much in demand; and most winelovers of that era did not seek out Château Pétrus or any other of the notable Pomerol properties. It was not until the legendary 1947 vintage that Pétrus gained notoriety in wine circles. Although we have not tasted that particular vintage, those experienced tasters who have had the privilege of sampling the 1947 Pétrus at its zenith (it may still be at that level today) claim that the 1947 Pétrus is one of the greatest wines produced in the 20th Century. Despite the fame of the 1947 vintage, another generation of wine drinkers generally ignored the wines of Pomerol. We recall drinking exceptional Pomerols from vintages in the 1960's that commanded prices well below their counterparts in the Médoc (the area of Bordeaux where fabled estates such as Mouton, Lafite, Latour, and Margaux are located). However, beginning in the 1980's - specifically the 1982 vintage - Pomerol began to command average prices that exceeded those of most other Bordeaux wines. Today older vintages of Pétrus from the 1960's go for as much as $1000 to $10,000 a bottle! We drank the 2015, 1995, 1990, 1982, 1978, 1975 and the 1961 vintages of Petrus in March of this year and my favorite was the 1990! Unfortunately, the 1961 was not a great bottle neither was the 1975 but all the others showed up including the best showing ever for me of the 1982- a legendary “Once in a Lifetime” wine tasting on my 50th B-Day weekend.
