If only a modern-day politician could contribute as much to the quality of our life as the late great Thomas Jefferson.  He was one of the first advocates of wine in the United States and he is one of the reasons why we have the greatest selection of wines from all around the world in the U.S. today.  So, remember...no matter how bad it gets, we still have the best selection of the world’s greatest wines at the most competitive prices in the world here in the U.S. of A. Speaking of GREAT wines from the U.S.A…. I need a few good men or women to help me drink some really fine wine on this occasion our New Kids on the Block California Cult Cabernet Sauvignon wine tasting.  We will be sampling some very small production Napa Valley wines from wineries that did not exist before the year 2000.  What makes a "cult wine"? Do the producers pick the grapes at night under the full moon? Do they make it under a secret oath or while sacrificing a small farm animal? These ultra-expensive, hard to find wines from California just have more customers than they do bottles to go around.  The simplest factor in the economy kicks in with these wines, good old supply and demand.  These wines are priced where they are because that’s what they sell for!

Beau Vigne was established in 2002 in Napa Valley by Ed and Trish Snider. The winery, which translates to "beautiful vineyard," started with a few acres of vines in the Atlas Peak appellation, releasing its first wines that same year. It was acquired in 2018 and is now owned by winemaker Julien Fayard.

 Three things that I love in life…

are cooking, food and wine, so it was fitting that I would visit Napa Valley and dine at the French Laundry. What I didn’t imagine, was for the experience to take my life in a completely unexpected direction. After a lavish meal, I wasn't sure how thirsty for wine I would be at a 10 a.m. tasting the next day, but it was fortuitous that I would proceed as planned.

It was a cool morning and the fog that sits at the bottom of the valley at this time of day was drifting away. The tasting started on top of a hill that sits in the middle of the vineyard, looking south. The view was spectacular!

After having breakfast and tasting what is still to this day one of my favorite white wines, I fell in love—with Napa Valley, and even more with wine. I thought to myself, "Wouldn't it be so cool if I could have something like this one day!"

That magic moment on the hill in 2006 was something that would affect everything about my view of wine and the Napa Valley. Later that day I met winemaker Aaron Pott who opened up some amazing older wines that I couldn't wait to learn about. We bonded and became friends, and he offered to show me around the area on my next visit to the valley. It was on that trip, that I would find the property Somnium sits on today. I knew I wanted a place with A++ soil and a beautiful view. Far up the switch backs of Howell Mountain, I found the perfect property, and purchased it in the spring of 2009.

Vineyard development began with Cabernet Sauvignon in 2011 and continued through 2014 when I discovered the glories of Cabernet Franc, which we also planted on the estate property. In 2020 we ushered into the next exciting chapter for Somnium when we welcomed new head winemaker, Julien Fayard. With Julien at the helm, I am excited to bring another dream to life as we expand our portfolio to include some of the varietals I have grown to love over the years.

I named my vineyard Somnium, which means “dream” in Latin, because I thought owning my own winery was something that would just be a dream, but it became a reality. I can't tell you how many times I have signed an autograph for a child and added the note—dream big! It is a life motto—it’s how I think, how I live and what I preach! My dreams never stop, and they continue to evolve. Now that Somnium is a reality, my next dream is to create an environment and experience where it is easy for others to fall in love with Napa Valley, just like I did so many years ago.

Adversity Cellars is a project from Russell and Heidi Bevan that is designed to showcase sites that have unique flavor and textural profiles from vineyards whose location forces the vines to struggle for their existence; forcing them to deal with great Adversity.  Russel Bevan started Bevan Cellars in 2005 but this Adversity label started in 2019 making it the youngster of the group.

Russell Bevan's passion for wine dates back to his days in high school. Everything he has done in life up to this point in time has pushed him to become the winemaker he is today.  To date, he has crafted double digit hundred point wines but is excited to embrace the challenge of crafting wines from these dynamic sites that force the vines to deal with so much Adversity.

Heidi spent the last 8 years flying and running an aviation company, enjoying the challenges this type of career presented to her.  Since meeting Russell and getting married, Heidi has moved in to the wine world helping with tastings and working at the winery side by side crafting the wines with her husband Russell.

Frias Family Vineyard, located in the Spring Mountain District of Napa Valley, was founded by Manny and Maria Frias, with their first official commercial vintage released in 1991. The family originally purchased the 100-acre property in 1977, planted the first 5 acres of vines in 1985, and debuted their first wine in 1987.  Ok so this is the one winery that was founded longer than 26 years ago but we always add a control to our experiments at Wine Watch.

Rob Sweeney arrived in the Napa Valley in 1986 when his family bought a piece of raw land in Oakville. A ghost winery of the former Vine Cliff estate which was defunct since the early 1900’s when phylloxera killed every vine. The property presented quite a project, one that Rob coveted.  Excited to be involved, so began his journey to learn the business by working at other properties around the valley.

Rob was first hired at Buena Vista Winery by winemaker Jill Davis as a harvest cellar intern where he started building his vast experience. Interested in every facet of a winery he moved on to the tasting room at Franciscan Winery, it provided the backdrop for where Rob learned the art of selling wine. His interest in the vineyards then took him to A&P Structures where he learned how to build trellis systems from true pioneers in the field.

Concurrently Rob attended Napa Valley College and earned his degree in Viticulture under the tutelage of the inspirational Dr. Steve Krebs. Several years later and with a strong foundation of knowledge and well rounded education under his belt, Rob returned to Vine Cliff.
“Back then if I needed to know the answer to something, I couldn’t look it up on the internet or watch a how-to YouTube video, I rode my ATV across the field or jumped in my truck and asked a neighbor.  That might have been Gustav Dalle Valle who showed me how to calibrate the sprayer, or Alex Vyborny, famed vineyard manager responsible for Far Niente and Joseph Phelps, whose ranch was across the street. Or after we bought a vineyard on Pickett Road, Al Frediani who would always dispense his advice with a twinkle in his eye. Occasionally we would source grapes from other vineyards, and I think I bought more grapes from Laurie Wood and visited his vineyard more times just in the hope that Laurie would beckon me to his porch for a visit.  Their collective knowledge was invaluable.”  These salt of the earth farmers had a wealth of experience and they were happily willing to pass on their knowledge and even loan their equipment.  Their seeds of wisdom fell on fertile ground and as Rob’s knowledge grew, so did his passion.

Ultimately, the Vine Cliff family vineyard grew into a winery operation and over the years Rob was inspired by having winemakers such as John Gibson, Paul Hobbs and Celia Welch who introduced him to cutting edge techniques and mentored him through blind tastings and blending trials.  Each harvest Rob acquired more experience and honed his skills-different vintage, different outcomes, different vineyards telling different stories.  More knowledge, more comparisons to draw from year to year. Crucial picking decisions became second nature and difficult blending trials made sense. The family business grew and made a place for itself among other wineries producing award winning wines with a reputation for excellence.

​Over time, Rob identified and personally developed vineyards on properties which the winery purchased in Calistoga and on Howell Mountain.  With Rob’s viticultural acumen and diligence these projects ultimately became the storied Pickett Road vineyard now known as the 100-point generating Few and Far Between vineyard purchased by Hundred Acre vineyard and the estate vineyards now owned by Cade Winery, Howell Mountain. At the time they each sold, both were the highest per-acre price ever paid for vineyards in the country.

As one chapter ends, so another begins-

 A culmination of 30 years of experience, 30 years of literal blood, sweat and tears led Rob to realize an unfulfilled dream, one that remained dormant surfaced and was the itch he needed to scratch. In 2017 it was time to branch out on his own and add Vintner to his portfolio when he started Gravel Pit Winery.

 Mention Paris to most people and you’ll get a rude waiter story; Aaron’s is that he was ten, and the sneering Monsieur brought him wine instead of the milk he had ordered, because milk ‘ees for babies.’

Aaron found himself yearning for a French wine adventure. He asked Michel if he could find him a job somewhere. Heeding his master’s call (his mind filled with romantic expectations of pulling hoses around a cellar) he dutifully showed up at the appointed Chateau… only to be taken on as winemaker. So began 6 years of living and working in France, first as Winemaker at Château Troplong Mondot and later director of Château La Tour Figeac.

Ready to come home in 1998, Aaron phased himself back to California with a stint as Beringer’s “flying winemaker” making wine in France, Italy and Chile. Here’s when he met and wooed his wife, Claire, with his “impossibly romantic” lifestyle, and found another great friend and mentor, Jean-Louis Mandreau (winemaker at Château Latour from 1970 to 1983) who wasn’t so impressed with the lifestyle, but thought Aaron had a lot of potential. Ready to stay in one place for a while, Aaron took over as winemaker for St. Clement in 2001, then in 2004 he moved to Quintessa as winemaker and general manager.

In 2004, we purchased a 76 acre (.2 acres planted) property on Mt. Veeder and began to develop our dream of owning our own vineyards. In 2007 we launched Pott Wine and released our first vintage of Incubo, as well as our first collection of single-vineyard wines in 2009. The 2015 vintage marks the next big milestone for us; when our new vineyard was ready to make wines good enough to carry the purple seal of approval! The 2015 Viognier was released in 2016.  The 2015 vintage estate reds, Incubo and Space and Time will be released end of Winter 2018.
